Why Viseu?
Viseu, City of Viriato
Viseu is a city and municipality in the Centro Region of Portugal and the capital of the district of the same name.
The territory of Viseu was populated by a series of cultures including the Romans, Suebs, Visigoths and Moors. During the Roman occupation of Iberia, Viriato (Viriathus), the rebel leader of the Lusitanians, is assumed to have lived for a time in the vicinity.
And is considered one of the probable birthplaces of Afonso Henriques, first King of Portugal.
PLACES TO VISIT
My favorite places in Viseu
The 'Sé' of Viseu
The cathedral was first built in the early 12th century and during the 900 years since then has been
added
to and altered frequently.
The Sé was originally connected to the Duke’s palace and the castle.

Fontelo Park
Its origin dates to the 16th century, having been designed by D. Miguel da Silva, and later reformulated
by other
bishops such as D. Gonçalo Pinheiro, who oversaw making it bigger and putting up walls.
One of the biggest attractions of the park is the large family of peacocks that lives here.

Cava de Viriato
The Cava de Viriato is an octagonal area covering 32ha. Is one of the most emblematic feats of engineering of the 9-10th centuries on the whole of the Iberian Peninsular. It appears to have had some sort of military purpose but exactly what no one knows.
